Located in the heart of Edison, NJ, LaoWu Authentic ShangHai Dumpling is a culinary gem that brings the rich, comforting flavors of Shanghai straight to your table. Specializing in authentic Shanghai-style dumplings and dim sum, this cozy yet vibrant restaurant offers an intimate dining experience that evokes the bustling food streets of China’s largest metropolis.
The highlight here is undeniably the Crab Meat Pork Soup Dumplings. Each dumpling bursts with flavorful broth, delicately encased in a thin but resilient skin that’s expertly crafted to hold the savory soup without breaking. As customer Stephanie Cheng notes, these dumplings are "extra soupy" and notably larger than typical offerings, providing a delightful mouthful that perfectly balances texture and taste. Equally enticing are the Steamed Dumplings and the Salty Egg Yolk Shu Mai, both of which showcase LaoWu’s dedication to authenticity and quality ingredients.
For noodle lovers, the menu features standouts like the Spicy Pork Noodle Soup and the warming Lions Head Noodle Soup (红烧狮子头面), offering deeply satisfying bowls of comfort with rich broths and tender, savory meat. The Beef Noodles Soup and the uniquely textured beef tendon dish also come frequently praised for their perfect harmony of flavors and textures, bringing a robust and hearty aspect to the meal.
LaoWu’s dim sum offerings go beyond typical expectations with treats like the Shanghai Rice Balls in Sweet Rice Wine, a subtly sweet and aromatic indulgence that lingers pleasantly on the palate. Equally impressive are the Pork & Vegetable Wonton Soup and Pork Wontons in Spicy Sauce, delivering savory bites that are both comforting and packed with nuanced flavors.
Breakfast items offer a glimpse into the traditional tastes of Shanghai mornings. The Shanghai Turnip Cake, panfried to perfection with a crispy exterior and tender inside, is a must-try and paired perfectly with their Pumpkin Pancakes with Oats that bring a subtle sweetness and hearty texture for a balanced start to your day. Not to be missed is the Beef Scallion Pancake Wrap, a savory wrap that combines tender beef with fragrant scallions and flaky, crisp dough — hailed by customers like Matt Brumfield as a 10/10 dish.
The intimate setting at LaoWu Authentic ShangHai Dumpling adds to the overall experience; the cozy space encourages diners to savor every bite, often leading to lively conversations and a communal appreciation for authentic Shanghai cuisine. Be prepared, though, as the restaurant’s popularity means there can be wait times, especially during peak hours. Yet, customers agree that the wait is worthwhile — “Definitely the best Shanghai food in central Jersey,” says Matt, while others mention the efficiency and warmth of the service as a welcome complement to the meal.
Whether you’re craving the meticulously crafted soup dumplings, outstanding noodle soups, or delightful dim sum, LaoWu Authentic ShangHai Dumpling stands out as an essential destination in Edison for anyone seeking genuine and soul-satisfying Shanghai flavors. Their menu not only highlights the tradition but also embraces quality and boldness, making each visit an exploration of one of China’s richest culinary regions. If you’re passionate about great food that’s as authentic as it is delicious, this place promises an unforgettable feast.
I really love the crab and pork soup dumplings here. It’s extra soupy!! And the skin is perfect. They are also bigger than other places. The beef tendon had a crystal noodle texture.
Definitely the best Shanghai food in central Jersey. This place is very small and we had to wait in line for 30 mins outside in the cold on a friday, but the wait is worth it. Beef scallion pancake, Hot Sesame noodles, pan fried pork bun all 10/10. Spicy minced pork pan fried udon is fire.
LaoWu is the real deal! The crab and pork soup dumplings and salty egg yolk shu mai are my favorites. Other great options include the beef scallion pancake, pan fried pork buns, spicy udon stir fry, and spicy pork noodle soup. Space is limited so expect a wait during peak lunch or dinner times. Nonetheless, Highly recommend!
Expected to wait a while, especially during lunch hour, but we were lucky and promptly seated. We were very pleased with the quality of the food, as well as the speed and quality of the service. It is a cozy restaurant, so be prepared to maybe squeeze in between people to get to your seat. Would highly recommend the beef noodle soup.
The short wait on a Thursday afternoon is worth it. The most authentic soup dumplings in the area coming from a native Shanghainese. The prices are more than fair and the taste is delicious. Strongly recommend!
Gave this place a try for the first time last Sunday, since I have been few times I was around the plaza where this restaurant at before and saw long line outside and heard great things about the food from the people that works in the salon. But I only ordered for take out. So this review only for my take out experience only. I went inside to order my food and yes this place is really small for the amount of people that wanted to come and eat. I don’t know if this place first come first serve and no reservations that’s why most of the times I’m around this place saw people standing long line outside their restaurant. Wish if this place can move to other bigger space or take reservations only. Also another idea they can do whoever come first have to check in with someone inside (hostess or manager) and he or she give the customer a pager when there available table they page in so customer can wait in their car, but for me to standing outside on hot or cold weather that’s insane!! After I placed my order and paid they said I have to wait outside oh well. I don’t know if I’ll come back for the waiting to eat in the restaurant if they keep doing what they doing. Definitely can’t have a big reunion or celebration at this place with the space they have. So anyway I got scallion pancakes and spicy minced pork noodle soup. Both were really good.
I present this photo of an empty bowl as my precise point. This place is so good, I cleaned the bowl. The soup dumplings are also some of the best I’ve had. And the prices are very fair which is exactly why I’ll keep coming back. Far too many Chinese spots around here have insane prices. Forget those. Come here for your dim sum and noodle soups.
